IRVINE- On Tuesday, May 2, Beckman Varsity Boys Baseball played a home league game against Irvine High School. Both teams gave their best effort to win, but Beckman came on top, winning the game 7-1.

Beckman Senior Will Cohen started the game off strong for the Patriots with his pitching. Cohen nearly had a shutout game and contributed greatly to the Patriots’ success. His strong pitching was backed up by Beckman’s solid fielding; effort was seen all around the field. Patriot Junior Matt McLain commented, “As a team, we always have to work hard in the field and that’s exactly what we did today. Everyone was hustling to get Irvine’s batters out.”

In the first inning, Irvine successfully made a run off of Beckman’s pitch. However, the Patriots did not back down and instead responded to Irvine by making a run of their own, thanks to the bat of Senior Willie Lajoie. Beckman continued to add runs to their total in the third inning, Junior Jake Groves and McLain contributing to the runs. Beckman’s lead kept increasing in the fourth inning, where they scored three more runs; two of them from Lajoie. Freshman spectator Justin Wood commented, “Lajoie was on fire today. His bat connected with the ball every time and it helped Beckman’s lead grow.”

Patriot Junior Jared Platero came in to replace Cohen and successfully pitched against Irvine’s batters as well, as he did not allow Irvine to have even one hit. In the last inning, the Patriots continued to stay in the lead and did not back down for a second, leading to their victory. Beckman Head Coach Kevin Lavalle concluded, “It was a great win for us and we are looking to take home the league championship this season. This was a big win in accomplishing our goal.”

With this win, Beckman Varsity Boys Baseball’s record in league is now 9-3 and 19-4 overall. They will look to add another win to their record on Friday, May 5 with a rematch against Irvine High School.
