IRVINE – On Friday, Oct. 13, Varsity Boys Football competed against Irvine High School at Beckman’s Homecoming Game. Despite their fierce determination, Beckman lost the game to Irvine with a final score of 17-41.

Before the game, junior quarterback Nicholas “Nick” Hill recalled his pregame rituals, “In the locker room, I put my pads and helmet on. I was excited [to be] playing my first homecoming game. We walked through offense and defense.” Going over strategies and firing each other up, the football team was ready to head onto the game. Nick is the starting quarterback for the varsity team, so it was important that he headed into the game comfortably.

The Homecoming Game started off strong; Beckman offense was able to make decent drives down the field and defense held off the Vaqueros pretty well. Finally, in the second quarter, the Patriots managed to score a touchdown thanks to senior Omar Abdullah. However, things began to rush downhill as senior Max Cody went down with an injury.

Even though Beckman ended up losing, junior Jamar Coleman said, “The best part about going out and competing is that I get to have fun with my friends.” Even with a loss of such a large point deficit, Coleman kept his spirits up.

A particularly memorable moment recalled by junior Bryan Huckleberry was “run blocking a guy […] I flattened him out on the field, it felt like falling on a mattress. [It was] a really funny play in the middle of a tough game.” Huckleberry appeared content with his performance, despite their crushing loss.

Varsity Boys fell short on their goal of winning against Irvine High School. However, they did manage to gain 223 total yards, 95 passing yards and 128 rushing yards, while only yielding 17 points. Hill commented on their loss, “It was a rough loss for everybody, but this loss motivates me to become better for the benefit of my team.”

As a team, Varsity Boys Football fought their best at the homecoming game against Irvine High School. After this game, Varsity Boys Football has a record of 0-2 in league and a record of 1-6 overall. They are looking forward to add a win to their record on Friday, Oct. 20 against Woodbridge High School.
