IRVINE – On Friday, Nov. 3rd, Varsity Boys Basketball held its fundraiser, “Dancing with the Basketball Stars,” in collaboration with Beckman Girls Dance team. The show was produced by dance team boosters Brenda Lee, Aimee Glenn and Jenny Piper along with the basketball team booster Chris Baker.

The night started off with a welcome from the “Mistress of the Night,” show host Erin Andrews. The basketball team and the dance team opened a fast paced and exciting dance, which captivated the audience. The members of the dance team coordinated the performances and were influenced by pop and hip hop culture.

There were a multitude of numbers performed by a mixture of basketball and dance team members. There was a total of 12 groups, each competing for the title of the best team. Performances included titles such as “Basketball,” “Yeah!,”  “Brodance!,” “Humble,” “Get Low,” “Everybody,” “Beginning Ballet” and “Girl Power.” One of the most iconic performances was a rendition of Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back” by Joey HuebnerChan, Landry Breaux, Kabir Trivedi and Christina Kollias. Another dazzling number was a take on Soulja Boy Tellem’s “Kiss Me Thru the Phone” by Bradley Burdick, Ryan Wright and Ashley Budman. Both of these amazing performances earned a full score of 30 from the judges’ panel, which included Stephanie Le, Samantha Wasserman and Fynn Fehrenbach. At the end of the event, Justin Wood, Jenna Kristedja, Arjun Menon and Anna Della Marna performed the winning number, “Singing in the Rain.” After they received their trophy, everybody prepared for the final performance: “Get’cha Head in the Game” from “High School Musical.” This time, all the basketball and dance team members came out to perform on stage.

It was a pleasant surprise to see Beckman’s basketball team take on a different type of court: the stage. “Dancing on stage is a completely different experience than playing on the court,” said junior Colson Wakamoto. “Basketball takes a lot of coordination, but being a good dancer takes that coordination to a whole new level. Overall, it was a great experience and it was really fun.”

Some spectators thought the basketball stars truly shined. “The performances were mesmerizing, when I first walked in there were so many lights and cameras,” said junior Anthony Moreno. On the other hand, some thought that dancing was definitely not an athlete’s forte. “The performances were not what I expected, it was surprising that the basketball stars were dancing, but they were not [as] coordinated as they would’ve been on the court,” said junior Alex Sidhu.

Stepping away from the stage and spotlight, Varsity Boys Basketball get back on the court with a game against Fairmont Prep at Crean Lutheran High School on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 12 p.m.
